A real estate developer with an eye for urban revitalization, Roy Carroll, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, has ambitious plans for the Triad area. Roy Carroll's firm, the Carroll Companies, is one of the largest landowners in the Triad area and focuses on projects that add value to the community. Roy Carroll started in the 1980s by developing single-family homes and earned a reputation for his luxury suburban homes and apartments. Now he has expanded to undertake industrial, commercial, and mixed-use developments, including new high-rise projects.
In 2008, Carroll and his firm completed the revitalization of the prominent Wachovia building, which had stood vacant for 15 years in downtown Greensboro. The Carroll Companies stepped in and turned the empty skyscraper into a 16-story inhabited landmark at the city's center. This project, titled Center Pointe, has 98 luxury condominiums, two full-floor penthouses, offices, restaurants, and retail space and has become a hub of activity downtown in the place of a blighted building.
In 2006, Roy Carroll was named Downtown Greensboro Person of the Year for his influential work in downtown revitalization. He was also awarded the 2010 Hall of Fame Laureate honor by the Junior Achievement of Central North Carolina, Inc., which is awarded each year to notable businesspersons for their entrepreneurial achievements coupled with their efforts to better the community.
Along with his dedication to business, Roy Carroll is committed to charitable work. The Carroll Companies adopted a new program titled Building an End to Diabetes, which involved building and selling new homes, resulting in the donation of over $634,000 of the proceeds from the sales in the years from 2006 to 2009 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In addition, The American Diabetes Association named Carroll 2012 Father of the Year. Recently, Carroll donated $1 million to his alma mater Greensboro College, where he sits on the Board of Trustees. He also danced in Greensboro's Operation Smile's Dancing with the Stars, which raised over $180,000 for operations for children with facial deformities.
